It’s not like traditional paper sheet music was ever able to turn itself, and in my mind, hitting the arrow key on a laptop or swiping your finger across the iPad seems a lot easier than re-shuffling a stack of pages while playing an instrument. But since I’m no musician, who am I to question if this Bluetooth foot pedal from AirTurn actually makes things easier or not?

The device itself is basically a BT transmitter which connects to a handful of foot switches from the likes of Boss or Roland, and it seems to work with pretty much any application you’d need it to including Acrobat, Word, PowerPoint, Keynote etc. The transmitter is powered by a couple of AAs which should keep it running for a few weeks, and it has a range of up to 100 feet which seems a bit overkill. For $39.95 you can get the AirTurn transmitter and receiver by itself, but the company also sells bundles with Boss forward and back foot switches and their Music Reader software which pushes the price tag to close to $200.

I got a heads-up email today that Foxit Reader — one of the most widely-used Adobe Reader alternatives — had released a new version. Curious, I headed over to the site to download and install the new version. After all, Foxit's popularity means our readers might be interested in reading about a major version update.

During the installer's first couple of screens, the Ask toolbar was offered — not a bit deal, really. It's included in plenty of apps nowadays. It does, however, default to being checked, so make sure you uncheck it (unless you're the type who likes to cram as many toolbars as possible into Internet Explorer).

After seeing the Ask toolbar offered, I chose to do a custom install — just in case Foxit defaulted to including anything else I didn't want. I noted eBay shortcuts and unchecked them, and then got a rather rude surprise (take the jump to see what):

This opens a can of worms and raises a question, how are Adobe Reader downloaders supposed to know that the version offered is not the latest? They apparently do not get that information on the Adobe Reader download page, nor are they informed about the insecure version on startup of the pdf reader.

Adobe seems to solely rely on the Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager, Adobearm which is configured as a startup process to launch with the operating system. This in itself is problematic depending on the computer system. Adobe ARM does not get executed before the next startup, which means that systems that run 24/7 will be insecure for that time, unless the administrator updates the program manually.

It is also inefficient if the computer user decided to block the program from being started automatically with the operating system. That’s highly understandable considering that Adobe does not provide local information about the startup item. A quick search on the Internet confirms the confusion as many users thought that the process was for ARM processors only.

Lastly, users who do not allow automatic updates on their system will also be left with an insecure version of Adobe Reader.

How to update Adobe Reader

There are two possibilities to update Adobe Reader. The first is to use the Help > Check For Updates option in the program itself. That’s obviously only an option if the computer is connected to the Internet as it will query Adobe servers to retrieve the latest version.

Corel WordPerfect offers a neat tool called the Shape Tool. This tool allows you to draw different types of shapes in your document. You select the shape you want to draw and then draw it using your mouse. You can then change the color of the shape. In this tutorial, I will show you how to use the Shape Tool in Corel WordPerfect.

Creating a New Document to Work On

We will first begin by creating a new document to work on in Corel WordPerfect. When you load your WordPerfect program a new document should automatically be created. If you are already working in the program, you will need to create a new document.

Selecting the Shape Tool in Corel WordPerfect

Next, we will select the shape tool and the shape we want to draw. Go to the top of WordPerfect and click Insert > Shapes. That will then open the shapes box. In this box, you will need to select the type of shape you want to draw. In the box, you will see the different shapes and a circle beside each one. Tick the circle of the shape you want to use and then click the little box at the bottom. The box at the bottom will give you more options for the shape you chose. You can select the shape of your choice by clicking the option in the box that opened. Once you have chosen your shape, click the OK button.

Drawing and Editing Your Shape in Corel WordPerfect

Now that you have selected your shape, you can draw it on your document. Using your mouse, click it and draw the shape on your document. You can draw it anywhere you like and you can draw it any size you like.

Now you can edit your shape. To edit the size of the shape, use your mouse and grab a corner of the box. Then drag the corner inward to make it smaller or outward to make it larger. You can also change the color of the shape. Click the shape to select it. Then go to the top of your program and click the second paint bucket in the toolbar. When you click the bucket, you will see a color palette open. In the color palette, you will need to click the color you wish to change the shape too. The box will then close and color of the shape will be changed. You can also move your shapes around your document by grabbing it and dragging it to where you want it.

If you wish to draw more shapes, you will need to click Insert > Shapes and go through that process again. Then you can draw more shapes on your document.

Adobe has fixed that critical flaw that afflicted so many versions of Flash. So if you’re interested in not being on the wrong end of a malicious attack you would do well to upgrade to the latest version of Flash, version 10.1.

The update brings an additional 32 fixes to various issues afflicting Flash.

The update is available for all versions of Flash, so this isn’t an example of Windows users getting an update then the rest of the world has to wait.

Of note: there’s still vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, which means that malicious PDFs (yes, they exist) can still affect you. Adobe says it will release a fix later this month.

The wonders of closed-source software!

This probably isn't going to help Adobe's case when its arguing for Flash on the iPhone, but the company has announced that there is a critical vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player, Reader and Acrobat for Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris, one that could potentially allow the attacker to take control of the affected system, ouch! To make things worse Adobe doesn't have an actual fix available just yet, though some workarounds have been suggested. Versions of Adobe Flash affected include 10.0.45.2, 9.0.262, 10.0.x and 9.0.x., Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.3.2 and earlier 9.x versions are also affected. Full details are available on Adobe's announcement page.

Sketch Corel Draw by samuel mancini

OJOsoft Zune Video Converter 1.5

Okay, you're not stupid. Neither am I. But I've used Corel WordPerfect at home and Microsoft Word at work, for years.

WordPerfect is better.

Not because it has a better learning curve; it doesn't. Not because of this or that cool thing that you can do - I mostly type text, whatever word processing program I'm using, and there's not much I do that's cool.

No, it's the codes. Only the codes. Those delightful codes!

Now, if you use Word at work, of course, you're used to the way it functions. But I'll bet you still find yourself, now and then, with some formatting you didn't ask for - with your words looking Extremely Strange on the screen and printing Extremely Strangely on the paper.

I'd like to say that never happens with WordPerfect. But I'd be lying.

Of course it does.

With Word, I have resorted on occasion to copying the text into a fresh document, or even copying it into Notepad to lose its formatting, then copying it back into the fresh document, hurling imprecations the while.

And I'm not (really!) unusually stupid. Nor unusually tech-unsavvy.

It's true that at work (in a library), I was often working with children who had no idea how to use a word processor, but were required to do so by their school. They could mess up a document faster and more creatively than you can imagine!

But I make mistakes at home, too, even though I'm a grownup. Sometimes the fingers go faster than the brain; sometimes I think I know what I'm doing, but I don't. And sometimes I'm trying out something new to me.

So, suddenly my page looks funny.

When that happens, because I'm a keyboard kind of guy, I usually hit Alt-F3. Sometimes, instead, I click on the “View” menu and scroll down to click “Reveal Codes.”

Bang! Suddenly, I have a gray window at the bottom of the page. The gray space shows my text, the formatting codes, and a cursor that keeps up with my cursor. I can make the window larger or smaller; often, I just leave it open, sized at three or four lines deep.

This window shows everything! This paragraph, for example, looks like this with its codes revealed -

This*window*shows*Italceverything!Italc**This*paragraph,*for*example,*looks*like*this*with*its*codes*revealed*-:4:33HRt

In the real WordPerfect, the asterisks would be little diamonds, and the numbers, HRt's and Italc's would be in variously shaped little boxes, very easy to find (and searchable, too). They show exactly when you switched to italics, exactly how many hard returns you used between paragraphs.

None of this is necessary for robots, but for those of us who are human and make human mistakes, this is an enormous benefit: You don't have to have any idea what you did wrong! “How did that code get there?” you say, but you don't really care. You just take it out, and the screen above reverts to something normal.

Sometimes it's not that simple, but most of the time, it really is.

Oh, I do love codes! Thank you, Corel!

Download Nitro PDF Reader 1.1.1.13 from Fileforum now.

Even today, we tend to use the phrase “Adobe PDF” when referring to the Portable Document Format, despite the fact that Adobe released its ownership of the standard into the open community in 2008. The typical opinion has been that releasing PDF as ISO/IEC 32000-1 was more of a symbolic gesture, but that Acrobat would always remain the principal application for creating PDF files.

But it isn't a monopoly that users particularly like anymore. A security study last February by security software provider Webroot of its own SMB customers revealed that nearly a quarter believe they are susceptible to cyber-attacks on account of insecure plug-ins including Adobe Reader. That feeling is compounded by raw data from Mozilla providing evidence that as many as half of all Firefox browser crashes are triggered by either Adobe Flash or Adobe Reader — a fact which compelled Mozilla's engineers to redesign the entire plug-in model for Firefox 3.6.4.

Today, the makers of what started out as a set of Acrobat plug-ins and later became a commercial alternative to Acrobat itself, are making their first real bid to unseat Adobe as the de facto software provider for PDF. The way Nitro PDF Software is doing this is by releasing today a free alternative to Adobe Reader that replaces the Reader plug-in entirely.

The replacement will be an application that not only lets users edit the PDF files they download, but type new text at any point into those files, and create new PDF files as well.

“PDF is all that we do. We live and breathe it. So the next logical step for us was to introduce a free PDF reader, but one that is revolutionary and that the world has been waiting for,” pronounced Gina O'Reilly, Nitro PDF's senior vice president of marketing, in an interview with Betanews.

“With Adobe Reader, I'm sure you're familiar with the typical complaints: It's bloated, it's vulnerable to security attacks, but more importantly, it's simply lacking in functionality. All it is, is a viewer and a printer; and unless you have paid a premium to do anything else, that's all it does,” O'Reilly continued. “A lot of other options in the market come with some sort of compromise. So in the case of Adobe Reader, that might be a large footprint and annoying reminder updates, [along with] restricted functionality, in the fact that there is none.”

Multiple collaborators can comment on edits to a PDF document in Nitro PDF Reader.

Nitro PDF Reader is a stand-alone application that uses the Ribbon UI functionality made popular by Microsoft Office. If it has any drawbacks over Adobe Reader at all, it's the fact that it doesn't view PDF files inside the browser context. Instead, you download PDFs through whatever your browser happens to be, and they appear in the separate Nitro application context.
But in that context, the application will offer some features that will compete with Acrobat, Adobe's commercial PDF producer application line, the most obvious being the ability to create and save PDF files from scratch.

Nitro PDF's chief product officer Lonn Lorenz — a veteran product manager from Adobe — gave Betanews a demonstration: “Let's say that I have a file that I want to send around for comment and review. If I zoom in on this page and I want to create a Post-It note…As I put a note in place, it keeps track of who put the note down, what time and date that they added it, and I can add my note to that.

“When I send this out to people to get comments back on,” Lorenz continued, “I can just go to the File menu and e-mail this PDF, and it'll automatically launch your e-mail client, attach this PDF, and you can send it off for review. Once you open this file and see this comment, you could add your own reply. With your reply to this comment, you could start a thread of conversation around this review. You could also use the text highlight tools, where you can highlight, cross out, or underline text…I can actually start to make use of my PDF files. Where the Adobe Reader and other readers are limited in this regard is, I can actually save my file! How simple is that? All the basic functionality in a free product.”

One feature that I found truly inspiring — something I would literally use every day — is a simple button that lets you stamp a PDF form with a scan of your signature. Many legal firms have gotten into the habit of printing out the final page of a PDF contract, then signing the contract, scanning it back in, and appending it to the PDF, just so the final page can bear a signature. With this feature, Nitro PDF keeps scans of multiple signatures on hand, and you can stamp one and resize it to fit any location on a page.

Though it's too early to declare that Nitro PDF “thought of everything,” it's clear that during its beta process, its engineers did think ahead. The free Nitro PDF Reader does include the ability to protect files with a simple password, and to embed fonts where necessary (the company's commercial edition has more extensive options). And to help deter situations where certain PDFs can be maliciously re-engineered, users can selectively block their PDFs from having the ability to make embedded calls to Web sites, with selected exceptions — a kind of localized firewall. Lorenz also told us users will have the ability to turn off JavaScript execution ability and leave it off.

“What Adobe has potentially made a very grave mistake in doing is not being more proactive in responding to attacks, and not really addressing them in any meaningful way,” argued Nitro PDF's Gina O'Reilly. “So when we conceptualized Nitro PDF Reader…one of our main goals was to ensure that our product is secure, and that we are responsive. We're currently working with a third party to get validation for Nitro PDF Reader, so that we can stand up and say…the product stands up, and in the areas that we might not stand up, we will be addressing. We've kind of turned the security issue on its head, in that rather than expecting things to happen and then addressing them, we're trying to get on the forefront with this. It's very important that our users feel safe and secure when using the product.”

PhotoShop users have complained for years that PhotoShop can be quirky, unyielding, stubborn and generally difficult. Here are just a few tips and tricks that which you might not be able to locate in the Adobe PhotoShop manual when you need them. These will definitely make the Adobe PhotoShop work more easily for you. Most of these ideas will work on many versions of PhotoShop.

By and large, these same tips and tricks work on PhotoShop for a Mac as well. The difference is that instead of using the Control key, Mac users will be using their Command key.

Layers Palette
When you start to work on an image in PhotoShop, check your Layers Palette first!

Don’t see the Layers Palette? No problem. Click on WINDOW (at the top of the PhotoShop screen, towards the right hand side) then click on Layers. The Layers Palette will appear on the screen.

If your Layers Palette has one layer, and the title of that layer is “Background,” you will need to change the title. As long as it says “Background,” quite a few options will be “grayed out” and will not allow you to use them when you click on them. This has been a huge source of frustration to new PhotoShop users for years now.

The solution is to double-click on the word “Background.” A new window will pop up which is called “New Layer.”

Look for ” Name: Layer 0” …fFind it? Good! Highlight “Layer 0” with your mouse and type the letter “a” (or any other letter or number key you prefer) and hit OK (After this, whenever you double click on a layer title to change it, you will not get the pop-up window anymore. The title will simply become highlighted allowing you to type in a new name for that layer).

“Layer 0” has been replaced by “a.” (or whatever key you designated). You can name this just about anything, so find a key that is easy to hit. Yeah, you could give this layer a descriptive name if you wanted to, however you will often be working on many layers, knowing that they are going to be flattened eventually so you can save your work as a .jpg.

Only take the time to name your layers descriptive things if you plan on saving this file as a PhotoShop (.psd) file, or have confusingly similar layers that you would otherwise have a tough time keeping separated. It is important to remember that .psd files are larger and take up a lot more file space than .jpg, .tiff or .png files.

Now, if you want to click on EDIT, then Transform or Free Transform, those options are now available to you. Transform gives you options like scale, rotate, skew, distort, perspective, warp, rotation, flip horizontal and flip vertical.

Rotating Your Entire Picture
While Transform will allow you to change selected pieces of a layer, you will need to use IMAGE, Rotate Canvas to turn your entire picture. If you download a digital image from your camera, it might appear sideways if you turned the camera to get a long horizontal shot. Now’s the time to flip the image using IMAGE, Rotate Canvas. By using this option, the image doesn’t spill off the canvas. Sometimes, if you use EDIT, Transform, Rotate to turn a selection, that selection could end up partially off your canvas. You can only see what is on your canvas. So if you want to turn an entire picture, rather than just the selected part, use IMAGE, Rotate Canvas.

Beware of the Tools Palette Crop Icon!
Speaking of changing the picture drastically, if you use the Tools Palette’s Crop icon to crop your picture down to a smaller size, it will crop the entire file! Not just the layer you may be on at the moment.

Sizing Your Graphic
If you are fooling around with sizing, use the Marquee icon on the Tools Palette to copy the part of the picture you think you might like to keep. Copy and Paste that to a new layer. Don’t worry about creating a new layer. When you give PhotoShop the “paste” command, it will automatically paste that selection into a new layer for you. It is better to try out sizes with a new layer than it is to use the crop feature, then have to get into the History Palette to back up to where you were when you decide that you don’t like the cropped file.

Making a New Layer - Combining Several Merged Layers
Sometimes you have 5, 10 or 15 layers that you’d like to merge into one convenient layer. Perhaps you’d like to copy your work, at least those layers which are turned on and visible. But you might not want to merge all the layers. If you simply click on Merge Down, Merge Visible or Flatten Image, you will never be able to go back and “un-merge” them again after the file has been saved as one layer.

Why is this helpful? Sometimes I will have layers that change the look of the file and will turn on some layers for one use, and turn on others for another use. For instance, if the graphic is a woman with her hands outstretched, one layer may have her holding chocolate cake and a dish of ice cream. Another layer may put a pot roast and steaming hot mashed potatoes in her hands, and a third layer may contain a salad and bread. The same file can be used to illustrate different chapters in a cookbook, by simply making visible the food layer that is currently desired.

You can create a new layer which incorporates all the layers currently visible. BE SURE THAT ALL LAYERS YOU WANT TO HAVE INCLUDED IN THIS NEW LAYER ARE TURNED ON, that is, the little eyeball icon at the left of the layer title is showing. If not, click in the blank space where the eyeball should be and it will appear, and your layer will show on the canvas also. Then hold down all of these keys: Control, [Command instead of Control on a Mac] Alt, Shift and e.

If you clicked on your top layer before making a merged layer of visible layers, then the new merged layer will appear above that, at the top of your list of layers. The new merged layer always appears above the last layer that you clicked on, which is highlighted in the Layer Palette and is referred to as your “active layer.”

Cutting and Copying a Layer
Let’s say you want to copy a layer. You’d find that command under EDIT. But wait! It is grayed out. Regardless of whether your layer is called “Background” or something else, you will need to select what is to be cut or copied before that command will let you use it! If you will select the layer by either clicking on SELECT and ALL, or holding down both the Control key [Command instead of Control on a Mac] and the A key, then the layer will be selected and you can then go to EDIT and will see that CUT and COPY are now usable.

Hot Keys
Starting to use “hot keys” on the keyboard to activate commands, instead of clicking within PhotoShop itself, will save you a lot of time in the long run. Many people who are accustomed to using Microsoft programs will find it second nature to use the hot keys for Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All, etc. And those hot keys are the same in PhotoShop! When you put your mouse over an icon in the Tools Palette, the hot key equivalent will appear along with the name of the icon. The selections in toolbar at the top of PhotoShop (such as Image Size under IMAGE) show you the hot keys, when one is available. Not every command comes with its own hot key combination.

Drawing Around An Image With the Lasso Tool
This tip has saved me hours of aggravation! There are three lasso tools available for your use within the Tools Palette. Only one of the lasso tool icons will be visible on your Tools Palette at any given time. If you click on that lasso icon and continue to hold the mouse button down, the three lasso icons will appear and you can click on the one you want to use.

The regular lasso tool (the one at the far left) is a free-form way to draw borders. However, if you will hold down the ALT key while you use this tool, the lines that it draws will all be straight lines. This is very useful when you are outlining something! Increase the viewing magnification until the outline becomes a jagged edge of pixels. Then draw along the edge with the lasso tool, holding down the ALT key so that you go from point to point. When the magnification is high, you will find that just about anything you want to draw around is easier if you use straight lines. Some of those lines will be very short though. When you have completely enclosed what you are outlining so that the starting and ending points meet, reduce the magnification and you will see the entire outline. At this point, it is very helpful to save what you have just drawn. You'd hate to have to go through all that all over again!

Saving Your Lasso Outline or “Selection”
Click SELECT and Save Selection. The pop-up window gives you a place to name your outline. Next to  “Name:”  type in the name of the outline you just created. You can save quite a few outlines in there and go back to them when you need them. This function will not allow you to access an outline in any file, only the one you were working with it in. When you re-save the file, the outlines that you saved will be included.

The next time you go into PhotoShop, give these tips and tricks a try. They will make using PhotoShop easier, you’ll notice less grayed-out options and you may find you are working faster and with less frustration.

They certainly couldn't push such a viewer silently through a required Windows Update — and alter our file associations so that PDF files opened with this new tool. Good lord, can you imagine the outcry if Microsoft was found to be messing with our preferences without our say so?! We'd never hear the end of it.

Make it an optional update, and you're leaving it up to users to make the switch. Based on what I've seen from the users I've supported over the past 16 years, good luck getting someone to switch applications when they already have one that works. We can shout security and common sense all day long, but at the end of the day, it likely wouldn't matter. Average users are much more numerous than power users like you and me, and they've been OK with Reader all along — even when you and I complained about sluggish start times and bloat. They simply aren't concerned.

On top of that, the problem isn't really Reader or PDF files in the first place.

The real problem is unwary users who don't know when they're being phished or misled. PDF currently provides a convenient attack vector but you can bet that the bad guys would simply find another way to ensnare users if Microsoft added a less-exploitable PDF viewer.

Yes, Reader exploits have been steadily rising. No, there isn't really a compelling reason for Reader to be able to launch external executables from a PDF. Yes, Adobe needs to overhaul the program's security features. Ultimately, though, computer users need to take more responsibility for their own security.

Pay attention to who's sending you email. Ask yourself, “is there any reason this person would need to send me a document?” Don't click Yes, OK, or Next without first understanding what's going on.

The best defense against malicious software, exploits, and scammers, isn't software — it's an alert, educated user who understands risks and takes the appropriate steps to mitigate them.

The new Updater is designed to keep end users up to date in an automated way.
With the activation of the new Updater, Windows users will have the option to download and install updates for Adobe Reader and Acrobat automatically, without user interaction. This is an important evolution in the distribution of updates.

If you would like to activate the new feature. Go to Edit, Preferences (Ctrl-K), and then select Updater to chose your preferred update method.

Creating Plastic Buttons can be done fairly easy in Photoshop. In a few easy steps you can create some nice looking Plastic Buttons. These buttons are used a lot on websites. If you are a beginner, don't worry. I will write the first part of this tutorial for beginners and the second part for the Advance users. In this tutorial I will show you how to create the Plastic Buttons in Photoshop. So let's begin.

How to Create Plastic Buttons in Photoshop for Beginners

Open your Photoshop program and let it load. Now you will need to create a new canvas. Go to the top of your Photoshop window and click File > New to create a new canvas. Create your canvas about 300 pixels by 300 pixels. You can crop your button when you are finished. Set your background to white and then click OK.

Now you will need to draw your button. Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool from your toolbar and draw a rectangle on the canvas. You can make what ever size button you want.

Next you will need to Rasterize your layer. Right click on the Shape Layer in the Layers Panel and click Rasterize Layer from the pop up menu. If you do not see your Layers Panel then press F7 on your keyboard.

Right click again on that same layer and select Blending Options from the pop up menu. The Blending Options dialog box will pop up. You will see many options on the left hand side of that box. Below I will tell you which ones to click on and what Values to enter in the fields. Make sure that you click on the word and not just check the box. If you just check the box then you won't see the options for that effect.

Recently, Didier Stevens, a well-known security researcher, demonstrated a social engineering attack, which relies on the “/launch” functionality as described in the PDF specification (ISO PDF 32000-1:2008) under section 12.6.4.5. This is a good example of powerful functionality relied upon by some users that also carries potential risks when used incorrectly by others. The warning message provided in Adobe Reader and Acrobat includes strong wording advising users to only open and execute the file if it comes from a trusted source. Furthermore, the default option within the dialog is to not execute.

Adobe takes the security of our products and technologies very seriously; we are therefore always listening to and evaluating ways to allow end-users and administrators to better manage and configure features like this one to mitigate potential associated risks. We are currently researching the best approach for this functionality in Adobe Reader and Acrobat, which we could conceivably make available during one of the regularly scheduled quarterly product updates.

As we investigate this, users can use the following method to further mitigate against this risk. For consumers, open up the Preferences panel and click on “Trust Manager” in the left pane. Clear the check box “Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications” as shown below.

For administrators who wish to accomplish this with a registry setting on Windows, add the following DWORD value to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals

Name: bAllowOpenFile
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0

Furthermore, an administrator can grey out the preference to keep end-users from turning this capability on, by adding the following DWORD value to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals

Name: bSecureOpenFile
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1

Note: These samples assumed you were adding registry settings to Adobe Reader 9. For Adobe Acrobat, you would replace “Acrobat Reader” with “Adobe Acrobat”, and for a different version, you would substitute its value for “9.0″.

Adobe dropped a bumper patch for its PDF Reader and Acrobat today to fix 15 documented security holes that expose Windows, Mac and UNIX users to malicious hacker attacks.

The update is rated “critical” because of the risk of remote code execution attacks via rigged PDF files.

According to an advisory from Adobe, the vulnerabilities affect Adobe Reader 9.3.1 (and earlier versions) for Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX, Adobe Acrobat 9.3.1 (and earlier versions) for Windows and Macintosh, and Adobe Reader 8.2.1 (and earlier versions) and Adobe Acrobat 8.2.1 (and earlier versions) for Windows and Macintosh.

These vulnerabilities could cause the application to crash and could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

This patch batch also coincides with the release of a new automatic update for the Reader/Acrobat software.  The default installation configuration runs automatic updates on a regular schedule and can be manually activated by choosing Help > Check for Updates.

Here are the raw details on the 15 documented vulnerabilities:

  • A cross-site-scripting vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0190).
  • A prefix protocol handler vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0191).
  • A denial-of-service vulnerability; arbitrary code execution has not been demonstrated, but may be possible (CVE-2010-0192).
  • Denial-of-service vulnerability; arbitrary code execution has not been demonstrated, but may be possible (CVE-2010-0193).
  • A memory corruption vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0194).
  • This update resolves a font handling vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0195).
  • A denial-of-service vulnerability; arbitrary code execution has not been demonstrated, but may be possible (CVE-2010-0196).
  • A memory corruption vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0197).
  • A buffer overflow vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0198).
  • A buffer overflow vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0199).
  • A memory corruption vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0201).
  • A buffer overflow vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0202).
  • A buffer overflow vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0203).
  • A memory corruption vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-0204).
  • A heap-based overflow vulnerability that could lead to code execution (CVE-2010-1241).

cheap adobe

Introduction: As you can see the original shot is extremely far from a masterpiece or work of art. With some full color editing, tone enhancement, and contrast adjustments you will surely end up with a much better looking picture. This tutorial is made especially for more intermediate and advanced Photoshop users.

Step One: Flattern your first layer, then deplicate so you can easily get back to your original layer at any time. Use Control+J for duplicating.

Step Two: Make yourself a new color balance layer with the adjustment layer icon.

Step Three: With this new layer you can now adjust the midtones, shadows, and highlights separately. Every photo needs different editing. Beware of burning certain parts with highlights and shadows. Keep values even otherwise you'll have an odd looking effects. Always enable the preview option and click OK when it looks slightly better than before.

Step Four: Now flatten the image. Layer>Flatten Image.

Step Five: Again, duplicate the layer with the hotkey you used before. You will now have a background layer and the new one you just created.

Step Six:
Change the new layer model from normal to hardlight in the layer menu. Adjust the layer opacity to about 65%, but the opacity for your specific photo could be from 40% to 90%. Use your judgment to determine what is best for your photo.

Step Seven: Create a new layer, except this time a Levels Adjustment layer. Modify the RGB Channel. First number is used to adjust the overall dark tones and shadows contrast. Use about 25. The second number is to adjust the midtones levels in your photo. Use 1.43. Its used to lighten your picture without dodging parts. Use 250.

Step Eight: Create another new layer, except a Hue and Saturation adjustment layer. Now you can edit the tone of each color in the Edit box. Don't put the values too high.Use the preview option. This will give you an idea of how it will look.

Step Nine: Flatten all your layers once more. Now your photo should look more enhanced.

Step Ten: Go to Image>Adjustments>Variations. Now you can tone the photograph how ever you look. For my photo I used green, blue, and cyan because of the specific landscape it is. Since mine is a lake, it was an appropriate color choice. If you have a forest, use greens and yellows. If you're using a sunset, you can use reds, yellows, and blues. Try to play with different color options to see what fits best. If you need to dark or lighten your photo when you adjust the variations, do so.

Then you're done!

"Smaragdify" Photoshop Action by Dave Ward Photography

adobe suite cheap

With Photoshop, you can pretty much do almost anything. In essence, you're playing god of the computer art world, creating and editing whatever suites your taste. If you want to play Zeus, then here are the steps to create lightning by using the tools that were already programmed in Photoshop.

Step 1: Making Clouds

You can't have lightning unless you got clouds, same in Photoshop. First, create a new layer and name it Lightning. You can name it whatever you want, but Lightning seems to be the most logical in this case. Second, make sure your foreground and background colors are set to default, black and white, respectively. This can be done manually, or you can just press D. This is the same for both PC and Mac.

Once the colors are set to default, go to the Filter menu at the top of the window and choose Render, then Clouds.

Step 2: Make More Clouds

Now, one cloud won't just create lightning, it's pretty harmless. Again, same in Photoshop. This time, instead of rendering another cloud, go back to Filter, Render, and then Difference Clouds. Once that is done, go to the Image menu at the top of the window and select Adjust, then Invert. This should result in something that looks like lightning.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

To finish, double click on the empty area to the right of the layer name, and then pull in the upper-left slider. You'll want to split the sliders by holding down the Option key for Mac users and the Alt key for PC users. The right half of the slider should be moved all the way to the right edge. Next, grab the left edge of the slider and start moving to the right until you are satisfied with the look of the lightning. To have an idea of how far you need to move it to begin making it look like lightning, you're going to have to move the slider almost all the way to the right as well.

As with Photoshop and many problems of life, there are multiple solutions and multiple paths. This is just one of many ways to make lightning in Photoshop. Fiddle around with this method and also combine it with other methods that you already know to make this lightning look more realistic. After all, creating art is like magic, you can't give away all your secrets.

Last month we wrote about Crocodoc, a new Y Combinator-funded company that makes it very easy to upload a text document or PowerPoint deck and mark it up online to share with your colleagues. Unfortunately, it was also pretty bare boned — you couldn’t even save your edited document to your hard drive. Today, that’s changing: Crocodoc has rolled out some key new features (including the ability to save) that make the service significantly more flexible, and also pits it more directly against Adobe’s Acrobat Pro.

Aside from the ability to save to PDF, the new version includes a freehand pen tool, a tool to convert any website to PDF (which you can then add notes to), and a new API. In a few days, the company will be releasing its application on Google’s recently-launched App Marketplace. The service will also be rolling out a Flash-based embeddable document viewer (similar to what you’ll find on DocStoc and Scribd) that lets you both view and mark up embedded documents.

CEO Ryan Damico says that these features make Crocodoc more competitive with Adobe’s $400 Acrobat Pro software because the free Acrobat Reader most people have doesn’t allow them to mark up and save their documents (personally, I’ve been avoiding any software with the word ‘Acrobat’ in its title for years). Damico does acknowledge that there are still plenty of premium features that Crocodoc doesn’t have that Adobe’s paid software does, but says that this basic editing/saving functionality is what most people are after, anyway. Damico says that in the long term, Crocodoc is hoping to “do to Acrobat what Gmail did to Outlook” by taking a widely used desktop application and bringing it online.

Workshop UNIP de Corel Draw - 28-05-2007 by roorpaulinia

Bitmap used to be the only format for images - JPG, BMP, or TIFF - and in fact, it's still the most common format. Your digital camera saves pictures in bitmap and so does your scanner. But to get the most of your bitmap image when you want it printed, on t-shirts or on brochures for example, highest resolution images, at least 300dpi, is preferred; otherwise, if you need to resize the picture, you will get blurry and pixilated results. This is because bitmap images are a pixel-by-pixel (you can think of a pixel as a dot) representation of an image and when you scale it, you're only resizing the pixels (dots) and whatever imperfections there are only gets magnified.

So what is vector graphics anyway? Here's a definition taken from Wikipedia, “Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygon(s), which are all based upon mathematical equations, to represent images in computer graphics.” Still confused? Well, to put it simply, any shape drawn in vector is a visual representation of a mathematical equation. For example, a line is just two given points with a specified distance between them. If you enlarge or shrink that line as a shape, the equation doesn't change, only the variables change and the computer can easily recompute the result to show an accurate drawing of the resized line. No imperfection is introduced and the shape stays sharp and crisp.

You can now imagine how this is useful in printing or in the multimedia arena, like gaming or movies or web animation. Several commercial software tools are available for drawing vector art and the most popular of these are Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator. These tools have been available for a long time, even longer on the Apple Macintosh. Web animators can use Flash to draw their vector images.

However, getting your bitmap image transformed to vector can be time consuming. Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, and Flash all have features that automatically trace your bitmap image, called Autotrace. Depending on the quality of your bitmap image, the Autotrace feature gives varying results on their vector tracing. Most of the time, you will still need to do a lot of editing to get it to accurately depict the original art.

There are also specialized software available that you can buy to trace bitmap images into vector but these too gives varying results and most of the time also requires manual editing. There is even a free online vector conversion site, called Vector Magic, where you can upload your bitmap image and get a vectorized copy. The main thing is to remember is that the better the quality of your bitmap image, the better the result.

What if your only copy of the image is of poor quality? The best way would be to have a graphic artist redraw it by hand. There are several companies offering this service, like fixlogo.com, which specializes in redrawing bad art images to crisp, clear vector art for a reasonable price. They even accept conversions from hand drawings on paper napkins! Just scan your source and upload it through their website.

Bitmap formats are still the king in storing pictures and images but with a vectorized copy of your image, you can now safely manipulate your image to your heart's content - change the colors, resize, change the layout - all without worrying about losing detail and clarity.

Sometimes people like to give their pictures an antique appearance. While black and white toning may pass off as old fashioned styling, it is sepia toning that gives a photograph a truly antique look.

The word Sepia has a Greek origin and denotes a mollusk from which a reddish brown pigment was derived in the old days to use as ink. Over half a century ago, in the process of developing prints, black and white photographs were treated with chemicals that left behind a sepia-like reddish brown tint over time.

Sepia toned photos are quite popular for aesthetics in modern times and even with modern digital photography and digital printing, you can have your collection of sepia toned photos.

Here is a guide on how to make photos look old fashioned in digital photography. There are two approaches you can choose from - you can shoot sepia toned pictures if your digital camera is equipped with appropriate filters. Alternatively, you can use simple picture-editing software to alter the colors in a color or black and white picture to get a sepia tint.

Check if your digital camera has a sepia filter listed under the color settings. Depending on your camera, you may be able to even preview your scene in sepia tone before shooting. Some camera models internally process a color picture and allow you to view the sepia toned picture only after you shoot. In either case, to get a good picture, you must make sure you set a high enough resolution to capture all the details in the scene. Avoid digital zoom if you can, as it affects the resolution of the picture. If you need a flash, use high shutter speeds to capture your imagery. You could use the camera's automatic exposure and focus settings if you are unsure of optimal lighting and shutter speed settings. Use a low noise setting by picking a high ISO number on your camera - this controls the device's sensitivity to light. use the 'raw' option rather than the JPEG format to capture the photos - this provides raw images that do not undergo internal processing, compression, saturation, etc.

If your camera does not let you generate sepia tones photos, use software such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw to process the photo once transferred to your computer. The trick is to have a predominantly red component and a minimal blue component in the altered photo. You should be able to tweak the RGB or hue and saturation settings to give your photo the old-fashioned look. The picture-editing software manual should provide you instructions on how to set this up. Configuring the software should not take more than a few minutes even for a beginner.

Practice is the only way to perfection. So explore your digital camera settings and software to get the best sepia toned photos.

Most of us already know that Photoshop is the “industry standard” graphic design program. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s always the best option, and it certainly doesn’t mean that it’s the best value for money.

At its retail price of 699 USD / 470 EUR, Photoshop isn’t exactly cheap. And let’s face it, not everyone needs the all of Photoshop’s high-end features. For example, Photoshop has the ability to edit images in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) mode, a feature mainly needed by print designers. If you work exclusively with web design, you may not want to pay extra for this feature.

Fortunately, there are more affordable (and sometimes even free) alternatives to Photoshop, and I’ll take a look at some very competent ones in this article. I’ll also include information on whether each program supports CMYK and Photoshop Plugins. All of the included programs support Photoshop-style layers and alpha channel transparency.

Corel Draw Graphics Suite X4

Corel Draw is the most expensive of Photoshop’s competitors, priced at 399 USD / 270 EUR. Still, there’s a lot included for that price. The Corel Draw Graphics Suite actually contains two major programs: Corel Draw and Corel Photo-Paint. Corel Draw is a vector-based design program similar to Adobe Illustrator (which sells for 599 USD / 402 EUR). Corel Photo-Paint is a bitmap-based design program similar to Photoshop. Both Draw and Photo-Paint enable CMYK editing, so they can be used by print as well as web professionals.

When compared to Photoshop, one of the things that I really like about Photo-Paint is its completely customizable interface. Just about everything, including toolbar buttons and even toolbar icons, can be changed to your liking. The Dock, which contains information similar to that found in Photoshop’s various Rollups, can also be moved out of the way with a single click. Another nice feature is the ability to turn plugins on or off while using Photo-Paint. In Photoshop, doing this requires shutting down and restarting.

For those working with both print and web design, or who require both vector and bitmap editors, I feel that Corel Draw Graphics Suite is the best of the programs I examined.

Paint Shop Pro X2

Paint Shop Pro has been available since 1992. The original version was created by JASC Software and marketed only via the Internet as shareware. JASC was purchased by Corel in 2004, apparently with the main intention of marketing Paint Shop Pro as a low-cost alternative to the Corel Draw Graphics Suite. Paint Shop Pro X2 is priced at 39.99 USD / 27.00 EUR. There is also an “Ultimate” version priced at 69.99 USD / 47.00 EUR. The retail Ultimate package includes media recovery software, a content pack, a basic version of Corel Painter, and a 2 GB USB flash drive.

Much of Paint Shop Pro is oriented around single-click solutions for common photo editing problems. If you appreciate this type of approach, and you don’t need print design features, Paint Shop Pro may well fit your needs, and do so at a very reasonable price. Also, due to the program’s shareware roots, there are many Paint Shop Pro tutorials and discussion forums available on the Internet, so help is usually very easy to find. Paint Shop Pro has only limited CMYK support, but it does support most Photoshop plugins.

PhotoLine

PhotoLine is something of a “diamond in the rough” among Photoshop alternatives. Although you’ve probably never heard if it, PhotoLine is an impressive program with many features. My only real issue with PhotoLine is its interface, which is somewhat old school. In Windows, the toolbars have a Windows 95 look, and in OS X, there’s no full-screen mode available, making PhotoLine feel more like an OS 9 program. PhotoLine is priced at 87.50 USD / 59.00 EUR.

Despite the interface issues, PhotoLine is a powerful program at an affordable price. It operates in both 32-bit and 64-bit mode, which is unusual for a program in this price range. There are several features that will appeal specifically to web designers, such as the Button Creator (see below). The Button Creator includes presets for styles such as Apple’s “Aqua” color gradient, and all the presets are fully customizable. The Effects tools are designed to work well with text, and multiple effects can be applied from a single dialog, making it easy to create the graphical text that’s often needed on web pages.

PhotoLine enables full support for CMYK editing, and while Photoshop plugins are supported, you may find yourself having to search Google for some plugin-related files (such as plugin.dll for Windows).

Ulead PhotoImpact

You may remember Ulead PhotoImpact from its original name: Aldus PhotoStyler. While Adobe was busy trying to create a CMYK capable version of Photoshop for Windows, Aldus/Ulead had already done so with PhotoStyler. Adobe bought the source code from Ulead and created Photoshop for Windows, and Ulead began the PhotoImpact line, with limited CMYK support. Although Ulead’s non-compete agreement with Adobe has long since expired, Ulead never bothered to return full CMYK editing support to PhotoImpact. More recently, Corel purchased Ulead’s product line, and it remains unclear whether PhotoImpact will continue to be upgraded. PhotoImpact is priced at 69.99 USD / 47.00 EUR.

Bearing in mind that CMYK is only needed for print work, I feel that PhotoImpact is the best graphics editor available for web-only work. There are a wealth of tools included for web work, including: two button designers (rectangular and any shape), a seamless background designer, a type effect which applies special effects to graphical text, and a web component designer that can help you quickly create just about anything, including banners, bullets, and JavaScript Rollovers. Many of the effects in PhotoImpact (including Animation Studio, Creative Lighting, and Particle Effects) can either be used on a single frame image, or exported as a series of images for use in animation. PhotoImpact also includes support for most Photoshop plugins.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

GIMP is a free, open source graphics editor originally developed for Linux. The program has since been ported to both OS X and Windows. GIMP maintenance and development is handled by volunteers. Although GIMP’s developers state that it’s not meant to replicate Photoshop, there’s little doubt that the program was/is intended to bring Photoshop-style graphics power to Linux, and to the open source community.

GIMP is a solid editor that can perform functions such as designing web graphics and editing photos. Personally, I’ve found that the learning curve for GIMP is slightly higher than that for other editors. One issue here is the interface, which in Windows is somewhat difficult to manage. For example, it’s easy for windows to overlap each other, and for background windows or the windows desktop to appear. For those willing to take their time with GIMP, and who don’t find the interface distracting, it would likely prove to be a very useful graphics editor.

GIMP has limited support for CMYK (via plugins). Photoshop plugins are not supported by default, but a Google search can help you find libraries which enable Photoshop plugins.

Paint.NET

Paint.NET began as a semester-long programming project at Washington State University. The program was intended by students to be a replacement for the simple Microsoft Paint program, which has shipped with every version of Windows. Although Paint.NET never actually replaced Microsoft Paint, it has been moderately successful as a Windows-only freeware graphics editor. As you might suspect, Paint.NET was built using Microsoft’s .Net framework. Since the program relies so heavily on .Net, it requires less file space than other programs, the current size of the download is just 1.6 MB.

Paint.NET comes across as slightly less powerful than GIMP. However, the fact that it was designed for Windows from the start has allowed for an interface that Windows users may find more agreeable. Paint.NET does not support Photoshop plugins, but it does support its own proprietary plugin architecture, and many freeware plugins are available. Paint.NET has limited support for CMYK, via a plugin.

Conclusion

Photoshop will continue to be the first choice for those who don’t mind its rather high price tag, and for companies such as design houses. Still, as you can see there are plenty of alternatives out there for any kind of wallet (even for empty wallets, as both GIMP and Paint.NET are free). Depending on your needs, some may even be a better option for you regardless of cost, especially if you don’t need the most advanced features in Photoshop.
