Workshop UNIP de Corel Draw - 28-05-2007 by roorpaulinia

Bitmap used to be the only format for images - JPG, BMP, or TIFF - and in fact, it's still the most common format. Your digital camera saves pictures in bitmap and so does your scanner. But to get the most of your bitmap image when you want it printed, on t-shirts or on brochures for example, highest resolution images, at least 300dpi, is preferred; otherwise, if you need to resize the picture, you will get blurry and pixilated results. This is because bitmap images are a pixel-by-pixel (you can think of a pixel as a dot) representation of an image and when you scale it, you're only resizing the pixels (dots) and whatever imperfections there are only gets magnified.

So what is vector graphics anyway? Here's a definition taken from Wikipedia, “Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygon(s), which are all based upon mathematical equations, to represent images in computer graphics.” Still confused? Well, to put it simply, any shape drawn in vector is a visual representation of a mathematical equation. For example, a line is just two given points with a specified distance between them. If you enlarge or shrink that line as a shape, the equation doesn't change, only the variables change and the computer can easily recompute the result to show an accurate drawing of the resized line. No imperfection is introduced and the shape stays sharp and crisp.

You can now imagine how this is useful in printing or in the multimedia arena, like gaming or movies or web animation. Several commercial software tools are available for drawing vector art and the most popular of these are Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator. These tools have been available for a long time, even longer on the Apple Macintosh. Web animators can use Flash to draw their vector images.

However, getting your bitmap image transformed to vector can be time consuming. Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, and Flash all have features that automatically trace your bitmap image, called Autotrace. Depending on the quality of your bitmap image, the Autotrace feature gives varying results on their vector tracing. Most of the time, you will still need to do a lot of editing to get it to accurately depict the original art.

There are also specialized software available that you can buy to trace bitmap images into vector but these too gives varying results and most of the time also requires manual editing. There is even a free online vector conversion site, called Vector Magic, where you can upload your bitmap image and get a vectorized copy. The main thing is to remember is that the better the quality of your bitmap image, the better the result.

What if your only copy of the image is of poor quality? The best way would be to have a graphic artist redraw it by hand. There are several companies offering this service, like fixlogo.com, which specializes in redrawing bad art images to crisp, clear vector art for a reasonable price. They even accept conversions from hand drawings on paper napkins! Just scan your source and upload it through their website.

Bitmap formats are still the king in storing pictures and images but with a vectorized copy of your image, you can now safely manipulate your image to your heart's content - change the colors, resize, change the layout - all without worrying about losing detail and clarity.
